“You get lost, hon?”

I roll my eyes when I step into the house again. “No, but thanks for the sarcasm.”

She chuckles. “I’m just teasing you.”

I pass her the meds and a glass of water. She grumbles about taking them, but she does. Then she peers at me. “You’re flushed.”

I of course blush deeper. “It’s cold out.”

She frowns. “No, that’s a flush, not cold cheeks.”

I shrug as naturally as I can. “Oh, I went by Magpie again. That’s what took me so long.”

Grams grins broadly. “Oh, is that why you’re flushed, hmm? Did Mr. Greer have a nice hot baguette for you?”

I groan. “Grams!” My cheeks turn even pinker.

“What?” she laughs. “Edward Greer is a handsome man, Sophie. And you’re beautiful, and single, and…”

“I was looking for a freaking pumpkin pie,” I mumble. “For you, I might add.”

“I thought he didn’t make pumpkin pies.”

“Well, I went back to check again.”

“And?”

“Still no pumpkin.”

“Uh huh,” she says dryly. Her look says she doesn’t buy a word of what I just said. But she mercifully lets it go. I make her some tea, and she goes back to her sunroom for another toke and more Netflix.

When I’m alone again, I finally let myself think over what just happened. And if I thought I was blushing before…

I chew on my lip. My cheeks burn hot. What just happened was freaking crazy. But it wasn’t reckless. It was inevitable. It’s like there’s a power that draws me to Edward. I can’t resist it, and I can’t ignore it. I don’t want to, either.

In the kitchen, I lean against the counter. I replay the feel of his hands on me. Of his lips on my skin. I remember his mouth between my thighs, and I gasp quietly.

My phone dings in my pocket. It rips me from my fantasy replay, and I frown. I pull it out. But when I see who it is, the fantasy shatters. It’s a text, from Joey. And it chills me to my core.

“Your new boyfriend is fucking dead.”

“Grams!” I yell, grabbing my coat. “I’ll be back!”

She cackles. “Say hi to Edward for me!”
